little boxes on the hillside.

It's interesting how the American frontier has almost been completely destroyed by the evolution of our country. As technology has progressed we have become lazy and dependent on the advanced system that we have built. Have you ever had to kill an animal in order to survive? Have you ever had to wipe your ass with a leaf? My favorite part of the book so far is how Conway explains to a group of campers how we as a society live in boxes. We wake up in a box. We drive to a box work in a box car. At the end of the day we go home only to sit in our box and watch the TV box. Why can't we think outside the box? even if it's in small amounts.

The book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn talks about takers and leavers in early human development or hunter gatherer societies VS. agrarian cultures.

Hunter Gatherers take only what they need to survive, they have tighter knit family groups because they depend on each other for survival, they have a greater sense of respect for the earth because they know that it provides for them but could also destroy them at the same time.

Agrarian Societies store their food so survival is not a really big deal to them, it often makes people more selfish and less willing to help their fellow man, it also means that they have more time to pursue technological, industrial, and spiritual advancement which often breeds dependence, pollution, war, crime all the bad parts of society.

We are bleeding our planet dry. Someday our environment will not sustain us and humans will cease to exist.
